Keep mosquitoes at bay with homemade citronella candles that are naturally effective and easy to make by following a few simple steps. Enjoy bug-free evenings with some added ambience!
Are you tired of being bugged by mosquitoes whenever you try to enjoy your patio or backyard? Keep the bugs at bay without dousing yourself in store-bought spray with DIY citronella candles. Plus, making them yourself is more economical in the long run, and it’s more fun! It’s easier than you think and a great way to add a personal touch to your outdoor setup.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your own citronella candles from scratch.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Ensure a smooth process by gathering everything you need before you begin:
- Wax: Soy wax or beeswax are both great natural options.
- Containers: Heat-safe options like mason jars, tin cans, or even old teacups will work great.
- Wicks: Pick wicks sized to fit the width of your containers.
- Citronella essential oil: This is the star ingredient—it’s what will actually repel the bugs.
- Wick holders: Any tool, like a pencil or a chopstick, to help hold the wick in place.
- Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl: For melting wax.
- Glue dots or hot glue: To anchor the wick.
Step 2: Attach the Wick
Now, to start on the project itself, secure the wick to the bottom center of your container using your glue. Lay your wick holder across the top of the container and wrap the top of the wick around it to keep it upright and centred.
Step 3: Melt the Wax
Use a double boiler to gently melt your wax. If you don’t have one, simply place the wax in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water. Alternatively, you can microwave the wax in short intervals, stirring in between until melted.
Step 4: Add the Citronella Oil
Let the wax cool slightly, then stir in the magical ingredient: the bug-repelling citronella oil. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 ounce (about 30 ml) of citronella oil per pound (454 g) of wax. Mix thoroughly to make sure the scent is evenly distributed throughout the wax.
Step 5: Pour the Wax
Carefully pour the scented wax into your containers, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. Make sure the wick stays centred and adjust if needed. Then, let the candle sit to cool and harden for a few hours.
Step 6: Trim the Wick
Once the wax has fully set, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (6 mm). This will help ensure a clean, even burn when you light the candle.
Step 7: Let the Candle Cure
For best results, let your candle cure for about 48 hours before lighting it. This will give the scent time to develop and allow for a longer-lasting burn. Store it in a cool, dry place until you are ready to use it.
Step 8: Use Your Candle!
Finally, it’s time to use your candle! It’s best to use it outdoors where the citronella can permeate the area but won’t become overwhelming as it might inside. Give it some time to release its scent, and definitely consider making more than one candle to create a stronger barrier.
Enjoy your bug-free outdoor space and don’t forget to snuff the candle out when you head inside for the night!
