The subcompact SUV class is strengthened by models such as the 2022 Hyundai Kona, which is as fun to drive as it is to look at.
Roll Out the Red Carpet
The 2022 Hyundai Kona’s greatness has been recognized by both Car and Driver and IntelliChoice as a fantastic offering in the subcompact SUV segment. From extensive on-road evaluations and comprehensive test data, Car and Driver awarded the Kona an Editors’ Choice Award. After examining five-year ownership costs of nearly 2,500 vehicles, IntelliChoice gave the Hyundai Kona a 2022 Best Value of the Year Award in the Subcompact Utility class, where it stole the spotlight from the Subaru Crosstrek.
“When an SUV delivers as crisp a driving experience as the 2022 Hyundai Kona, it’s hard to get hung up on the usual anti-crossover sentiment–so we won’t. The subcompact Kona is, simply put, a great package that blends carlike on-road behavior with bold styling, a dose of practicality, and an elevated driving position; we like it so much we gave it an Editors’ Choice award.” – Drew Dorian, Car and Driver
The Kona received a design refresh for 2022, making it raise pulses higher and turn heads faster than ever before. The new design features a stretched hood and bold new cladding, making the SUV look more polished than the previous year’s model. The front-end also features a Hyundai logo mounted above the grille, as well as headlights that are separated from daytime running lights. The slightly longer body provides the Kona with better proportions and makes it more pleasing to the eye.
“Even though it’s a short vehicle, the Hyundai Kona feels supple and stable yet agile. It’s not a high-riding SUV, and the Kona shines about town, where it slices through traffic with ease and actually fits in those annoyingly tight parking spots marked “compact.”” – Andy Bornhop, KBB
Roll Down the Highway
“The Kona is a top competitor among subcompact SUVs thanks to a strong optional turbocharged engine, sharp handling, and lots of features for the money.” – Cameron Rogers, Edmunds
The standard engine for the 2022 Kona is a 147-hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that pairs with a continuously variable transmission. Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, the Kona delivers agile handling and a surprising amount of fun. The suspension dampens out bumps in the road, isolating occupants from pavement imperfections.
Hyundai also offers a Kona N Line model, which upgrades the engine to a peppier 195-hp turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It provides more zip around town and when merging on the highway, as well as a more communicative feel between you and the vehicle.
Roll Up the Technology
The 2022 Hyundai Kona’s interior includes a touchscreen infotainment screen that sits atop the dashboard, linking to an intuitive system that reacts quickly to driver input. You can enjoy an 8.0- or 10.3-inch unit, complete with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.
Safety is also a top priority in the Kona, thanks to the Hyundai SmartSense safety features that includes a range of camera, radar, and motion detection technologies, such as automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning, to provide you with a more confident driving experience.
With plentiful standard features, a stand-out design, and space for whatever or whoever you need to carry, the 2022 Hyundai Kona is the ideal subcompact SUV.
